The opening of the Australian War Memorial in London took place at Hyde Park Corner on November 11, 2003. Attending the ceremony were HRH Queen Elizabeth II, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Australian Prime Minster John Howard and Second World War veterans from Australia and the UK. As well as numerous other dignitaries, several thousand members of the public also attended the event, which was broadcast live on the BBC and in Australia on the ABC.
The memorial represents the sacrifice of the over 100,000 Australian service men and women who died in the two world wars. The memorial consists of a wall of West Australian green granite, representing the green countryside of Australia. Inscribed on the wall are 47 battle sites from World Wars One and Two where Australians fought and died. Overlaid across these are 24,000 place names recording the origins of Australia's service men and women. A water feature flows across the surface of the wall and is designed to evoke memories of the suffering and loss felt by all.
The memorial will be the focal point of military and Anzac Day services in London from now on. The closest tube stop to the memorial is Hyde Park Corner. For more information visit www.dva.gov.au/commem/oawg/memorials/london.
