The following ‘In Memoriam’ notices originally appeared in Australian newspapers, and were reproduced in Robin S. Corfield’s excellent book, Don’t forget me, cobber: The Battle of Fromelles 19/20 July 1916. This comprehensive work is available from the Australian War Memorial bookshop.

BLAKE. Killed in action on 19 July 1916 (previously reported missing) George Francis, No 4737, late of 59th Bn sailed only on March 7 of the same year.
I have lost my soul’s companion
A life linked with my own
Each day I miss his footsteps
As I walk through life alone.

GIBBINS. In proud memory of Captain Norman Gibbins, of 55th Bn, killed at the very end of the terrible fighting at Fleurbaix, July 20, 1916. Loved and admired by every soldier who knew him.

Mid shot and shell, a living hell
They faced the foe that day.
Australia’s sons against German guns
They fought at Fleurbaix.
They paid the price, the sacrifice
They died for you and me.
God grant them rest, Australia’s best,
Who fought for liberty.
