The region of the former Front of most interest to Australians covers parts of Northern France and Belgium. The AIF occupied several parts of the British line during the course of the war and these can all be visited today. This is a beautiful part of the world. The area is still predominantly rural, with rolling green farmland dotted by small villages, each with its own charm. You cannot visit this area without being struck by the irony of such peaceful places once being the cradle of death and destruction. Fields which were once quagmires, littered with bodies and the detritus of war, are now idyllically peaceful and do not betray the magnitude of horror that once occurred there. Similarly, villages which were literally pounded into dust by incessant artillery fire are now bright, clean communities, where people work and shop, and children play in the streets. However, to those who look
for it, the war is never far away. Remnants of the war still remain, and
actions of brave men can be easily traced.
