Words and Thoughts is a collection of notable quotes, prose, poetry and other bits and pieces that help form an impression of life for the common soldier at the Front.

They are presented here largely without explanation or interpretation – the passages are intensely personal and it is better left to the reader to form their own impressions.

Also, this section is not specifically “Australian”. Although many of the passages were written by Australians, there are also inclusions from British, American and German soldiers. As the passages indicate, the privations, fear, shame and pain of war were experienced equally by soldiers on both sides of the line.
